Running Disc-Based Games from USB Across Computers: Why It Fails & Alternatives

You cannot simply make a disc-based game run directly from a USB drive on different computers. Here's why and how to achieve similar portability:

Why Direct USB Run Fails

  • OS compatibility: Games are compiled for specific OSes (Windows, macOS, Linux); a USB can't adapt automatically.
  • Hardware differences: Varying CPUs, GPUs, etc., affect game function.
  • Security: OSes restrict running executables directly from removable media.

Alternative Solutions

  1. Separate builds per OS: Compile Windows, macOS, Linux versions. Package with installers (Inno Setup, DMG). Distribute via website/itch.io.
  2. Web-based (HTML5): Runs in browsers across OSes. Host on web server; accessible via URL. Some performance/feature limits.
  3. Portable Windows executable (PE): Self-contained .exe with all assets. Runs from USB on any Windows PC. Limited to Windows.

Considerations

  • Game complexity dictates best approach.
  • Target audience platform preferences.
  • Security: Only run games from trusted sources.
