What Language Are Downloaded Games In? How to Check Before You Buy

Downloaded games support **multiple languages**, but the exact list varies by title, platform, and region. Most major releases include 8–15 languages; indie games often only English + 1–3 others.

Factors Determining Language Availability

• Publisher Budget: AAA (Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Microsoft) → full FIGS (French, Italian, German, Spanish) + Polish, Russian, Portuguese-BR, Japanese, Korean, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Arabic, Dutch, etc.
• Platform Store Policy: Steam, PS Store, Xbox Store, Switch eShop, Epic all display supported languages on the store page.
• Region Lock (Legacy): PS3/PSVita/3DS/Wii U digital stores were region-locked. Buying from a different region's store *could* limit languages (rare now; PS4/5, Switch, Xbox, PC are mostly region-free for languages).
• Genre: Text-heavy (RPG, Visual Novel, Strategy) → more languages. Arcade/Sports → fewer.

How to Check Before Buying

1. Store Page: Scroll to "Languages" / "Supported Languages" section. Lists Interface, Full Audio, Subtitles separately.
2. SteamDB / SteamSpy (PC): Search game → "Languages" tab shows history of additions/removals.
3. Official Website / Press Kit: "Features" or "Specs" page.
4. Community: Reddit (r/ShouldIbuythisgame, r/GameDeals), Steam Discussions—ask "Does [Game] have [Language] audio?"

Post-Purchase: Changing Language

• Steam: Right-click game → Properties → Language dropdown (downloads pack if needed).
• PS4/5: System Settings → Language → Game uses system language if supported; else falls back to English.
• Xbox: System → Language & location → Game follows console language.
• Switch: System Settings → Language → Game follows system language.
• Epic/GOG/Ubisoft/EA App: In-launcher settings or in-game options menu.

Pro Tip

If your language isn't listed, check for **fan translations** (PC only) on sites like Nexus Mods, Romhacking.net, or game-specific Discords. Never assume—verify on the store page.
