GTA San Andreas Save Transfer: Why Copying Files Fails & How to Fix It

Simply copying the GTA San Andreas User Files folder to a new PC usually fails because saves are encrypted with a machine-specific key (hardware ID / Windows user SID). The game refuses to load saves with a mismatched signature.

Where Saves Actually Live

  • Windows (Steam/Rockstar/Retail): %USERPROFILE%\Documents\GTA San Andreas User Files\
  • File: GTASAsf1.b (slot 1) … GTASAsf8.b (slot 8).

Working Transfer Methods

Method 1: Rockstar Games Launcher Cloud Saves (Best if Steam/RGL version)

  1. On old PC: Launch game via RGL → Ensure "Cloud Save" is ON (Settings → Cloud Saves).
  2. Wait for sync (check RGL → Game → Cloud Saves status).
  3. On new PC: Install via RGL → Log in → Launch → Cloud saves download automatically.

Method 2: Manual Transfer + Save Game Editor (Advanced, Required for Non-Cloud)

  1. Copy the entire GTA San Andreas User Files folder to new PC (same path).
  2. Download GTA SA Save Game Editor (e.g., GTASnP.com editor or San Andreas Save Editor by Paul Breeuwsma).
  3. Open each GTASAsf*.b file → Editor detects "Invalid signature" → Click "Fix Signature" / "Resign Save" → Save.
  4. Launch game → Slots appear.

This rewrites the machine hash to the new PC's ID.

Method 3: Start New Game → Use Cheats to Restore Progress (Fastest)

  • New game → Enter cheat codes for money (HESOYAM), weapons (PROFESSIONALTOOLS / PROFESSIONALSKIT), stats (VKYPQCF max stats).
  • Use "Select Mission" cheat (SCOTTISHSUMMER – not real; use save editor to jump mission index).

Prevention for Future

  • Enable Rockstar Cloud Saves (free).
  • Or manually backup the User Files folder and run the Save Editor resign step on each new machine.
  • Symlink the folder to a synced cloud folder (OneDrive/Google Drive) + resign on each PC.

Method 2 is the only way to move exact progress (stats, garage cars, wardrobe) without cloud.
