Can Downloading PC Games Give You a Virus? Only From Unsafe Sources

Downloading games itself doesn't cause viruses, but where you download from is critical.

High-Risk Sources (Avoid)

  • Torrent sites / P2P (cracks, repacks often bundle malware, miners, ransomware).
  • "Free" paid game sites, key generators, "crack" downloads.
  • Untrusted file hosters / obscure forums.
  • Fake "system optimizer" / "driver updater" ads on download pages.

Safe Sources (Official / Authorized)

  • Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Microsoft Store.
  • Developer/Publisher official sites (e.g., Factorio, Minecraft.net, itch.io for indie).
  • Humble Bundle, Fanatical, Green Man Gaming, GOG (authorized key resellers).

Protection Checklist

  1. Keep Windows & Defender updated (or reputable 3rd-party AV).
  2. Scan downloads before running (right-click → Scan with Defender / Malwarebytes).
  3. Use a standard user account (not Admin) for daily use.
  4. Enable Controlled Folder Access (Windows Security) to block ransomware.
  5. Don't disable AV to run a crack — this is the #1 infection vector.
  6. Verify checksums (SHA-256) for open-source/indie downloads if provided.

Bottom line: Stick to official stores. The "free cracked game" is the most expensive malware vector.
