Math and Logic Games Similar to Sudoku: KenKen, Kakuro, Nonograms, and More

If you love Sudoku's blend of logic, pattern recognition, and constraint satisfaction, these puzzle types will scratch the same itch—each with its own twist.

Logic Grid Puzzles (Pure Deduction)

  • KenKen (Calcudoku): Grid + arithmetic cages (sum, difference, product, quotient). Sizes 3×3 to 9×9.
  • Kakuro (Cross Sums): Crossword-style grid; each run sums to a clue. Digits 1–9, no repeats per run.
  • Futoshiki: Latin square with inequality signs (>, <) between cells.
  • Hitori: Shade cells so no row/column has duplicate unshaded numbers; shaded cells can't touch orthogonally.
  • Nonogram (Hanjie, Picross, Griddlers): Reveal a picture by filling cells based on row/column run-length clues.

Number Placement Variants

  • Killer Sudoku: Sudoku + Kakuro cages.
  • Samurai Sudoku: Five overlapping 9×9 grids.
  • Jigsaw Sudoku: Irregular (non-3×3) regions.
  • Skyscrapers: Place heights 1–N; edge clues show visible buildings.
  • Tents and Trees: Place tents adjacent to trees; row/col counts given.

Classic Pencil-and-Paper Games

  • Minesweeper: Deduction from numbered clues.
  • Battleship (Solitaire): Place fleet; row/col counts given.
  • Slitherlink (Fences): Draw a single loop; numbers = edges used.
  • Nurikabe: Shade "water" cells; white "islands" match numbered sizes.

Why These Sharpen Your Mind

  • Train working memory (holding multiple constraints).
  • Develop hypothesis testing (if-then reasoning).
  • Improve pattern recognition and spatial logic.

Start with KenKen (arithmetic twist) or Nonograms (visual payoff). Both have free apps with daily puzzles.
