System Requirements for The Sims 3 on PC

Because The Sims 3 is a 32-bit application with heavy reliance on single-core CPU performance and memory management, it runs differently on modern hardware than its specs suggest. Below are the official requirements, followed by practical advice for modern systems.

Official Minimum Requirements

  • OS: Windows XP (SP3) / Vista / 7
  • CPU: 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 or equivalent
  • RAM: 1 GB (XP) / 2 GB (Vista/7)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 / ATI Radeon X1300 (256 MB VRAM) – Must support Pixel Shader 2.0
  • Storage: 6 GB base game (+1 GB per expansion)
  • DirectX: 9.0c

Official Recommended Requirements

  • OS: Windows 7
  • CPU: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or better
  • RAM: 2 GB+
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 / ATI Radeon HD 2600 (512 MB VRAM)
  • Storage: 10 GB+

Modern Reality Check (Windows 10/11)

  • CPU: The game loves high single-thread speed. Modern i3/i5/Ryzen 3+ handle it easily, but disable "Core Parking" in BIOS/Power Options if you see stuttering.
  • RAM: 8 GB system RAM is the practical minimum; the game itself is limited to ~3.5 GB usage (32-bit limit).
  • GPU: Integrated graphics (Intel UHD 620 / AMD Vega 7 / Intel Iris Xe) run the base game well on Low/Medium. Dedicated GTX 1050 / RX 560+ allows High/Ultra with mods.
  • Critical Fix: Apply the 4GB Patch (NTCORE) to TS3W.exe and Sims3Launcher.exe to prevent Crash-to-Desktop (CTD) from memory exhaustion when using expansions/CC.
  • Compatibility: Run in "Windows 7 Compatibility Mode" and "Run as Administrator" if the launcher fails to start.

Note: EA no longer officially supports The Sims 3. The Steam/EA App versions are the same legacy builds.
