No single Nintendo console natively plays cartridges from all three generations (NES, SNES, N64). Each generation used different cartridge slots, CPU architectures, and voltage levels.
| Method | NES | SNES | N64 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) | ✅ (App) | ✅ (App) | ✅ (Expansion Pack tier only) | Subscription required. Save states, online MP, rewind. Best legal way. |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Includes N64, Genesis, GBA libraries. Required for N64 on Switch. |
| Wii / Wii U Virtual Console | ✅ (Shop closed 2019) | ✅ (Shop closed) | ✅ (Shop closed) | Purchased titles still redownloadable if previously bought. Wii U plays Wii VC titles in Wii Mode. |
| Classic Mini Consoles | NES Classic Edition (30 games) | SNES Classic Edition (21 games + Star Fox 2) | ❌ (No N64 Classic released) | Pre-loaded libraries only. Hackable (hakchi2) to add more ROMs. |
| Original Hardware + Flashcart / ODE | EverDrive N8 Pro, FXPAK Pro (SD2SNES), EverDrive 64 X7 — Play original carts/ROMs on real hardware. Requires original console + CRT/upscaler. | |||
Recommendation: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is the easiest, legal, portable way for all three. For original hardware purists: separate consoles + EverDrives.
