When Was Gaming Invented? No Single Moment—Evolved Across Millennia

There's no single "invention moment"—gaming evolved across millennia:

Pre-Digital (Analog)

  • ~3000 BCE: Senet (Egypt), Royal Game of Ur (Mesopotamia).
  • ~600 CE: Chess (India → Persia), Go (China).
  • 19th century: Modern board games (Monopoly ancestors, Kriegsspiel).

Electronic / Video Games

  • 1947: Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device (patent, not produced).
  • 1958: Tennis for Two (William Higinbotham, oscilloscope) – first interactive graphical game.
  • 1962: Spacewar! (MIT, PDP-1) – first digital computer game.
  • 1971: Computer Space – first commercial arcade game.
  • 1972: Pong (Atari) – first hit arcade game; Magnavox Odyssey – first home console.
  • 1977: Atari 2600 – cartridge-based home console boom.

Modern Milestones

  • 1980s: Arcade golden age, NES revitalizes home market.
  • 1990s: 3D graphics, PlayStation, online multiplayer (Doom, Quake).
  • 2000s: Broadband, MMOs, mobile, indie revolution.
  • 2010s–: VR/AR, cloud gaming, esports mainstream.

"Gaming" as structured play is ancient; "video gaming" began 1958 (Tennis for Two) or 1972 (commercial).
