Can You Trade In Virtual Console Games? No—Digital Licenses Are Non-Transferable
No. Virtual Console purchases are tied to your Nintendo Account/NNID and cannot be transferred, sold, or traded.
Why It's Impossible
Digital License Model: You license the right to download/play—not ownership of a resellable copy.
Account Binding: Purchases lock to the purchasing NNID (Wii U/3DS) or Nintendo Account (Switch).
No Secondary Market: Nintendo's ToS explicitly prohibits account sales/transfers.
No "Gift" Feature: Unlike Steam (giftable copies) or GOG (DRM-free installers), Nintendo offers no transfer mechanism.
What You *Can* Do
Family Sharing (Switch Only): Set one console as "Primary" for your account. Other users on that console can play your VC games. Does not work on Wii U/3DS.
Delete to Free Space: Remove the game → redownload later (free) as long as the eShop remains open (Wii U/3DS eShop closed March 2023—redownload still works for now).
Account Recovery: If you lose hardware, sign in on new device → redownload (Wii U/3DS require NNID link + support ticket).
Wii U / 3DS eShop Closure (March 2023)
No new purchases. Existing downloads: redownload anytime (Nintendo commits "for the foreseeable future").
No refunds. Funds in eShop balance expired Aug 2023.
Back up saves: Use Checkpoint (homebrew) or SaveMii (Wii U) to export saves to SD/PC.
Bottom Line: Digital console games are a lifetime license for *your* account only. Buy physical if resale matters.
