Games Playable in Windows Command Prompt: Classics & Custom Builds

The Windows Command Prompt (cmd.exe) won't run modern graphical games, but it hosts a surprising variety of classic text-based games and can launch external command-line titles. Here's what you can play natively and how to add more.

Built-in Games (No Installation Needed)

  • Minesweeper: Type minesweeper and press Enter.
  • Solitaire: Type solitaire (includes Klondike, FreeCell, Spider).
  • Hearts: Type hearts.

How to Access: Press Win+R, type cmd, hit Enter, then type the game name and press Enter.

Other Command-Line Games (Requires Download)

  • Guess the Number: Simple range-guessing games (source code widely available).
  • Text-Based RPGs: Story-driven with character development, inventory, and combat. Search "text-based RPG command prompt" or "batch file RPG."
  • Adventure Games: Choice-based narratives (Zork-style).
  • Snake/Tetris Clones: Text-based implementations using ASCII/ANSI graphics.

How to Play External Command-Line Games

  1. Search for "command prompt games," "batch file games," or specific titles on GitHub, itch.io, or programming forums.
  2. Download the .bat, .cmd, or executable file.
  3. In CMD, navigate to the folder (cd path\to\folder).
  4. Run the file by typing its name (e.g., game.bat).

Limitations

  • Text-only—no graphics, animations, or sound.
  • Limited selection compared to modern libraries.
  • May require learning specific commands or syntax.

It's a fun way to experience early computing history and learn basic scripting. For a richer retro experience, consider DOSBox or emulators.
