Fix: Computer Not Recognizing The Sims 3 Installation

Quick Fixes (Try First)

  1. Repair via Platform:
    • EA App / Origin: Library → Right-click Sims 3 → Repair.
    • Steam: Library → Right-click → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
  2. Run as Administrator: Right-click TS3.exe (in Game\Bin folder) → Run as administrator.
  3. Disable Antivirus/Firewall Temporarily: Add the game folder and TS3.exe to exclusions.

Driver & System Updates

  • Graphics Drivers: Update NVIDIA/AMD/Intel drivers from the manufacturer's website (not Windows Update). Clean install recommended.
  • DirectX: Download the DirectX End-User Runtime (June 2010) for legacy libraries Sims 3 needs.
  • Visual C++ Redistributables: Install 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015-2022 (x86 and x64) from Microsoft.
  • Windows Updates: Ensure 1909 or later (Win10) / 21H2 (Win11).

Compatibility & Config

  • Compatibility Mode: TS3.exe Properties → Compatibility → Run in "Windows 7" mode + "Disable fullscreen optimizations" + "High DPI scaling override (Application)."
  • GraphicsRules.sgr: If the launcher won't detect your GPU, edit GraphicsRules.sgr in the game folder to add your card's DeviceID (see ModTheSims guide).
  • Clean Boot: msconfig → Selective Startup → Uncheck "Load startup items" → Reboot. Tests for software conflicts.

Disc Install Issues

  • Clean discs with microfiber cloth (center outward).
  • Copy all discs to a folder on HDD, install from there (avoids disc-read errors).
  • If SecuROM activation fails, use the SecuROM deactivation tool to reclaim activations.

Last Resort

  • Uninstall completely, delete leftover folders in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 (backup saves first!), AppData\Local\EA Games, and registry keys (use Revo Uninstaller). Reinstall fresh.
  • Check EA Answers HQ or ModTheSims Help for specific error codes.
