Modern games cannot run without a GPU. Period. "Integrated graphics" (Intel UHD/Iris Xe, AMD Radeon 680M/780M) are GPUs—just ones built into the CPU die sharing system RAM. They lack the raw compute power, dedicated VRAM, and specialized hardware for current titles.
GPUs have thousands of cores optimized for matrix multiplication, texture sampling, and pixel shading—operations that happen millions of times per frame. CPUs have 6-24 powerful serial cores. They choke on graphics workloads.
Integrated graphics share system DDR4/DDR5 (50-100 GB/s bandwidth). Discrete GPUs have 300-1000+ GB/s on dedicated VRAM. The gap is structural.
Unreal Engine 5, Unity HDRP, id Tech 7, RE Engine, Decima—all assume hardware tessellation, bindless resources, async compute, and 4GB+ VRAM. Integrated solutions support subsets via driver emulation, killing performance.
Only older or extremely lightweight games run on integrated graphics:
Any modern 3D game (2020+) — Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, Starfield, Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur's Gate 3 — requires a discrete GPU for a playable experience. Minimum specs list GTX 1060 / RX 580 / Arc A380 for a reason.
No workaround, no secret setting, no driver update makes integrated graphics run modern AAA games. Buy a GPU or play older/indie/cloud titles.
