Playing Games Without a Graphics Card: Integrated, Cloud, Emulation

You cannot play modern 3D games without a GPU — but "graphics card" usually means discrete GPU. Every modern CPU includes an integrated GPU (iGPU) that handles display and basic 3D.

What Works on Integrated Graphics (Intel UHD / Iris Xe / AMD Radeon 680M/780M)

  • Esports / Low-Spec: CS2, Valorant, League, Dota 2, Rocket League, Overwatch 2 (Low 1080p 60+ FPS on recent iGPUs).
  • Indie / 2D / Pixel Art: Hades, Celeste, Hollow Knight, Stardew, Balatro, Vampire Survivors.
  • Older AAA (Pre-2015): Skyrim, GTA V, Witcher 2, BioShock Infinite, Mass Effect trilogy (Medium 1080p).
  • Emulation: GC/Wii (Dolphin), PS2 (PCSX2), PSP (PPSSPP), 3DS (Citra), Switch (Ryujinx/Yuzu — needs decent iGPU).

What Doesn't Work

  • Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, Starfield, Warzone 2.0, Unreal Engine 5 titles — require discrete VRAM + compute.

Workarounds for No Discrete GPU

  1. Cloud Gaming: GeForce Now (free tier), Xbox Cloud (Game Pass Ultimate), Boosteroid, AirGPU. Stream 1080p/60–1440p/120. Needs 25+ Mbps stable, low latency (<40 ms).
  2. Remote Play: Steam Link / Moonlight / Sunshine from a host PC with GPU.
  3. eGPU (Laptop w/ Thunderbolt 3/4 / OCuLink): Add desktop GPU externally. Expensive ($200+ enclosure + GPU).
  4. APU Upgrade: Desktop: Ryzen 8000G series (780M iGPU ≈ GTX 1050). Laptop: not user-upgradeable.

Bottom Line

If you have a Ryzen 5000G/8000G or Intel 12th–14th Gen (non-F), you already have a "graphics card" good for 50% of Steam. For the rest: cloud streaming.
