Games Inside Microsoft Excel: How They Work & Where to Find Them

Excel isn't a game engine — but its formula engine, VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), and grid make it a surprisingly capable platform for logic/puzzle games. No 3D, no real-time action — but deep simulation is possible.

How Games Are Built in Excel

  • Formulas: RAND(), IF(), INDEX/MATCH, FILTER(), LAMBDA() (recursive!) drive logic
  • Conditional Formatting: Visual state — color cells for units, terrain, HP bars, fog of war
  • VBA Macros: Event-driven (SelectionChange, Timer), loops, AI, animation, save/load, custom UIs (UserForms)
  • Shapes/Charts: Sprites, maps, graphs, minimaps
  • Power Query / Python in Excel (New): External data, complex calc

Famous Excel Games

  • Spreadsheet Arena (by Dylan Tallchief): Full RPG — classes, skills, loot, dungeons, turn-based combat. 100% formulas, no VBA.
  • Excel Minesweeper / Sudoku / 2048 / Tetris: Classic implementations — many formula-only
  • Civilization-like 4X: CellCiv, ExcelCiv — map gen, cities, units, tech tree
  • Financial Modeling Games: Cashflow clones, stock market sims
  • Educational: Excel Everest (learn Excel by playing)

Where to Get Them

  • GitHub: Search "Excel game VBA" or "Excel formula game". Repos: VBA-Games, Excel-Games
  • Reddit: r/excel, r/excelgaming — weekly showcases
  • YouTube: "Excel game tutorial" — creators like Leila Gharani, Excel Off The Grid, Dylan Tallchief
  • Itch.io: Tag "Excel" — some paid, some free

Build Your Own: Tic-Tac-Toe in 5 Minutes

  1. 3×3 grid (B2:D4). Format: Center, large font, borders.
  2. Data Validation (B2:D4) → List: X,O (or leave blank for click→VBA)
  3. VBA (Alt+F11 → Insert Module):
Sub CheckWin()
Dim r As Range, s As String
For Each r In Range("B2:D4")
If r.Value = "" Then Exit Sub
Next
' Check rows, cols, diags for XXX or OOO → MsgBox "X Wins!" etc.
End Sub
  1. Assign macro to each cell (Right-click → Assign Macro) or use SelectionChange event.

Limit: No real-time, no sound, no networking. But for turn-based, logic-heavy, data-driven games — Excel is a legit dev environment.
