Speedrunning N64 Games on Project64: Setup, Techniques & Rules

Project64 is an emulator, not a speedrun tool per se. Speedrunning on it means leveraging its features to optimize execution, practice, and verify runs—similar to console but with extra tools. Always check the game’s specific speedrunning community rules (Speedrun.com) regarding emulator legality. Many leaderboards ban or separate emulator runs due to load-time advantages and potential for tool-assisted features.

1. Emulator Configuration for Accuracy

  • Plugin Selection: Use GlideN64 or Angrylion (software) for the most accurate graphics. Avoid outdated plugins like Jabo or Rice.
  • Frame Skip: OFF. Never use frame skip for real-time attempts; it breaks input timing and frame-perfect tricks.
  • Counter Factor / VI Refresh Rate: Set to match console behavior (usually 1 or 2) to avoid speedup or slowdown.
  • Audio: Enable audio; some tricks rely on sound cues.
  • Save States: FOR PRACTICE ONLY. Use them to drill segments, learn RNG manipulation, or practice tricks. Never in a submitted run.
  • Input Lag Reduction: Use “Raw Input” or direct input plugins, run in exclusive fullscreen, disable OS compositing (Game Mode on Windows).

2. Core Speedrunning Techniques (Game-Agnostic)

  • Route Optimization: Study the current World Record and community routes. Understand why each step is taken.
  • Movement Tech: Master game-specific movement (side-hopping, roll cancels, damage boosting, pause buffering).
  • RNG Manipulation: Learn how to manipulate drops, enemy patterns, or AI via specific inputs and timing.
  • Glitch Execution: Practice clips, wrong warps, sequence breaks, and item duplication until consistent.
  • Menuing / Text Speed: Optimize menu navigation, text skipping, and inventory management.

3. Essential Tools

  • LiveSplit: Industry-standard timer with autosplitters (if available for your game).
  • Input Display / TAS Tools: For analyzing frame-perfect inputs (practice only).
  • Video Recording: OBS or ShadowPlay for run verification.
  • Community Resources: Speedrun.com game pages, Discord servers, YouTube tutorials, TAS videos.

Example: Super Mario 64 on Project64

  1. Set up GlideN64, Counter Factor 1, no frame skip.
  2. Learn 16-star / 70-star / 120-star routes from the SM64 community.
  3. Practice BLJ (Backwards Long Jump), cannonless, stair clip using save states.
  4. Grind movement consistency on castle grounds.
  5. Attempt full runs on original hardware or approved emulator settings per leaderboard rules.

Golden Rule: Emulator is for learning and practice. For serious competition, original hardware (or officially sanctioned emulator settings) is usually required. Respect the community’s rules.
