Erasing DS Cartridges and Making Custom Games: Limitations and Alternatives
You cannot erase a game from a DS cartridge and write your own. Here's why:
Read-only media: DS cartridges are mask ROM or flash memory locked at manufacture; not user-writable.
Security: Encryption and signing prevent unauthorized code execution.
What You Can Do Instead
Flash carts (e.g., R4, DSTWO, Ace3DS+): Load homebrew/games from microSD. Quality varies; some are unreliable or blocked by firmware updates. Legal gray area.
DS Emulators on PC (DeSmuME, melonDS): Play DS games on computer; supports save states, cheats, enhancements.
Homebrew development: Learn C/C++ with devkitPro (libnds) to create your own DS games. Run on flash carts or emulators.
Respect copyright: Don't illegally download/distribute commercial ROMs. Focus on original creations or legal backups of games you own.
