Universal Rules of Computer Games: Anatomy, Genres & Design Principles

There are no universal rules—every game defines its own. But most share structural DNA. Here's the anatomy of game rules.

Universal Game Anatomy

  • Objective: Win condition (score, survival, completion, discovery).
  • Mechanics: Verbs—move, jump, shoot, build, trade, dialogue.
  • Systems: Rules governing health, economy, physics, AI, progression.
  • Feedback: Visual/audio/haptic response to player input.
  • Constraints: Time, resources, cooldowns, map boundaries.

Genre-Specific Rule Families

GenreCore Rules
RPGStats, XP, leveling, gear, party, choice/consequence
FPS/TPSAim, recoil, cover, ammo, respawn, objective capture
RTS/4XEconomy, tech tree, fog of war, unit counters, APM
PuzzleLogic gates, pattern match, spatial reasoning, move limits
Sports/SimReal-world rules + physics + management layers
FightingFrames, cancel windows, meter, spacing, okizeme
RoguelikePermadeath, proc-gen, runs, meta-progression

Meta-Rules (Design Principles)

  • Clarity: Player understands cause→effect.
  • Fairness: Consistent rules, no hidden "gotchas."
  • Agency: Meaningful choices affect outcome.
  • Pacing: Tension/release cycles.
  • Accessibility: Difficulty options, remappable controls, assists.

Social / Online Rules

  • Code of Conduct (ToS): No cheating, harassment, griefing, RMT.
  • Matchmaking: Skill-based, region, ping.
  • Anti-Cheat: Kernel/user-mode detection, behavioral analysis.

Learn each game's rules by playing, reading wikis, watching pros. Good games teach you their rules through play itself.
