Best Joysticks for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9)

As an AI I don't use hardware, but here are the community favorites for FS9 (2004) – still relevant for vintage simming:

Classic Era (USB, FS9 Native Support)

  • Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback 2 (SWFF2): The gold standard. Strong FFB, great centering, 100+ buttons/axes via shift states. Hard to find working; USB 1.1 may need hub on modern PCs.
  • Logitech WingMan Force 3D: Good FFB, cheaper, reliable.
  • Saitek X45 / X52 (Original): HOTAS, throttle quadrant, decent FFB (X45) or spring (X52). Drivers needed (SST).
  • CH Products FlightStick Pro / FighterStick / CombatStick: No FFB, but legendary precision, durability, analog throttles. Still made/supported.

Modern Options (Work via USB/HID)

  • Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS: Hall-effect sensors (no drift), ambidextrous, affordable. No FFB. Pair with TWCS Throttle.
  • VKB Gladiator NXT / Gunfighter: Premium gimbals, modular, best precision. No FFB (unless GK base).
  • Virpil Constellation Alpha / MongoosT-50: Top-tier, metal, expensive.
  • Honeycomb Alpha Flight Controls: Yoke + Switch Panel. Great for GA/airliners.

Key Features for FS9

  • Force Feedback: FS9 supports DirectInput FFB (SWFF2, X45, G940). Modern sticks (T.16000M, VKB, Virpil) lack FFB motors.
  • Twist Rudder: Essential if no rudder pedals.
  • Hat Switch (POV): For padlock/view panning.
  • Throttle Axis: Separate quadrant (Saitek X52, CH Throttle, TWCS, Honeycomb) preferred over stick slider.

Recommendation: Used SideWinder FFB2 (if you can maintain it) for immersion. T.16000M + TWCS for reliable modern precision. CH FighterStick + Pro Throttle for bulletproof longevity.
