How to Get a Job in Video Game Design

1. Build Core Competencies

• Design Theory: Systems, loops, economies, player psychology (read: Rules of Play, Game Design Workshop, The Art of Game Design).
• Scripting/Code: C# (Unity), C++ (Unreal), GDScript (Godot), Lua (Roblox/LOVE).
• Tools: Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot, Jira, Confluence, Miro, Figma, Excel/Sheets (data design).
• Specialization: Level, Systems, Narrative, Combat, Economy, UX, Technical, Live Ops.

2. Education Paths

• Degree: BS Game Design, CS, Interactive Media (USC, DigiPen, SMU, UCSC, Abertay, Breda).
• Bootcamps: GameDev.tv, CG Spectrum, Vertex School (6–12 mo, portfolio-focused).
• Self-Taught: Free courses (GameDev.tv Udemy, Unity Learn, Unreal Online Learning, GDC Vault).

3. Portfolio (Critical)

• 3–5 complete, playable prototypes (WebGL/itch.io/Steam page).
• Each shows: Core loop, design doc (1-pager), iteration log, post-mortem.
• Include failures with lessons learned.
• Tailor to role: Level design → greybox maps; Systems → economy sim; Narrative → branching dialogue tool.

4. Experience & Networking

• Game Jams: Global Game Jam, Ludum Dare, GMTK Jam – finish games in 48–72 hrs.
• Modding / UGC: Skyrim, Cities: Skylines, Fortnite Creative, Roblox – published mods = shipped product.
• QA / Contract: Entry point; test → internal transfer (common at Ubisoft, EA, Blizzard).
• Events: GDC, PAX Dev, Game Connect, local IGDA meetups, Discord communities.
• LinkedIn: Follow recruiters; comment on design posts; share your prototypes.

5. Application Strategy

• Target Junior Designer, Associate Designer, Gameplay Scripter, Level Designer roles.
• Cover letter: Reference a specific mechanic in their game + how you'd iterate.
• Design test: Usually 2–4 hr take-home (paper design, spreadsheet balance, Unity scene). Practice these.
