Pokémon Silver (Generation 2, Game Boy Color) can only trade with Generation 2 games via Game Link Cable:

Pokémon Crystal
Cannot trade with:
Generation 1: Red, Blue, Yellow (Time Capsule in Gen 2 allows one-way Gen 1→Gen 2 transfer only, not direct trade).
Generation 3+: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen, and all later games (GBA/DS/3DS/Switch).
Trading Mechanics
Cable: Game Boy Link Cable (DMG-04) or Universal Cable (GBA link works for GBC).
Location: Pokémon Center → Cable Club (upstairs).
Restrictions: No new species/moves/items from Gen 2 to Gen 1. Pokémon must not know Gen 2 moves or hold items to go back.
Modern Alternatives
3DS Virtual Console: Gold/Silver/Crystal on 3DS eShop support local wireless trading (no cable needed) and Poké Transporter → Pokémon Bank → Pokémon Home → modern games.
Emulator Linking: mGBA, VBA-M support link cable emulation over LAN/netplay.
Trading is strictly locked within the same generation on original hardware.
