How to Safely Clear Games from an Action Replay Without Bricking It

Manually deleting files from an Action Replay (AR) via PC mass-storage mode is a recipe for disaster. The device relies on proprietary firmware and a structured database; blind file removal risks firmware corruption, database orphans that crash the system on boot, and missed hidden partitions on DSi/3DS models.

✅ Safe, Official Methods

  1. On-Device Menu (Best): Boot the AR, navigate to My Codes or Game List, select the game, and choose Delete/Erase. This updates the internal index correctly.
  2. Format / Reset (Nuclear Option): Use Settings → Format Device / Reset to Defaults. This wipes everything—codes, subscriptions, updates, game list—and returns the unit to factory state. Backup saves first if your model supports PC save backup via manager software.
  3. PC Manager Software (Legacy Models): For older units (DS, DS Lite, Wii, PS2), use the official Action Replay Code Manager (PC/Mac). Connect via USB, choose "Manage Games," delete selections, and sync. This keeps the database intact.

⚠️ Before You Wipe

  • Export Custom Cheats: Use the Manager to export .xml/.txt files.
  • Subscription Cache: AR Max/DS/DSi had paid code subscriptions; formatting loses local cache, but re-login restores it.
  • Firmware Stays: Formatting does not downgrade firmware.

If Bricked: Some DS/DSi models recover via specific button combos + PC updater. Check Codejunkies Support for official recovery steps.
