Bird's-Eye View Game Genres: RTS, Tower Defense, ARPG, 4X & More

A "bird's-eye view" (top-down / isometric) camera appears across many genres. The genre is defined by core gameplay loop, not just camera. Here are the major categories:

Major Genres with Top-Down / Isometric View

  • Core: Base building, resource gathering, army production, real-time combat.
  • Examples: StarCraft II, Age of Empires II/IV, Company of Heroes 3, Warcraft III.

2. Action RPG / Hack-and-Slash (ARPG)

  • Core: Single character, loot, skills, real-time combat, progression.

7. Roguelike / Roguelite (Top-Down)

  • Examples: Hades, Enter the Gungeon, Nuclear Throne, Vampire Survivors (reverse bullet hell).
  • Camera: Fixed top-down.

8. MOBA (Top-Down Isometric)

  • Core: 5v5, hero control, lanes, objectives, teamfights.
  • Examples: League of Legends, Dota 2, Smite (3rd person but same genre).

How to Identify Your Game

Tell me:

  1. Do you control one character or many units?
  2. Is combat real-time or turn-based?
  3. Is there base building / resource gathering?
  4. Is the goal destroy enemy base, survive waves, explore dungeon, build empire?
  5. Any loot / leveling / skill trees?

With those answers, I can pinpoint the exact genre.
