How Many Versions of the "Fate" Tabletop RPG Exist? Core Editions & Standalone Games

"Fate" refers to a family of tabletop RPG systems by Evil Hat Productions, not a single game. Major editions:

Core System Editions

  1. Fate Core (2013): Full, universal system. Aspects, Skills, Stunts, Stress/Consequences, Fate Points. SRD free.
  2. Fate Accelerated Edition (FAE, 2013): Streamlined. 6 Approaches (Forceful, Flashy, etc.) instead of skills. One-page rules. Great for one-shots.
  3. Fate Condensed (2020): 50-page distillation of Core. Modern layout, clarified rules, same engine. Current recommended entry point.
  4. Fate System Toolkit (2016): Modular subsystems (magic, vehicles, organizations, horror, cybernetics) to hack Core/FAE.

Notable Standalone Games Powered by Fate

  • The Dresden Files RPG (2010): Pre-Core Fate 3.0. Deep magic system, Harry Dresden's world.
  • Spirit of the Century (2006): Pulp 1920s. First commercial Fate (Fate 2.0/3.0).
  • Diaspora (2009): Hard sci-fi, Traveller-style.
  • Atomic Robo RPG (2014): Action science, based on comics.
  • Khan of Khans (2023): Solo/GM-less Fate Condensed game in Glorantha.
  • Venture City (2016): Supers setting for Core.
  • Fate of Cthulhu (2020): Cosmic horror, corruption mechanics.

Fate Worlds / Worlds of Adventure

Anthology setting books (Vol 1–2) with 4–5 mini-settings each (e.g., CrimeWorld, Camelot Trigger, Gods and Monsters).

Total distinct "versions": 4 core editions + 10+ standalone games + numerous setting hacks. All share the Fate Point economy + Aspects core.
