Games with Maximum Freedom ("Do Whatever You Want")

No game offers absolute freedom (technical/logical limits exist). These come closest by category:

Open-World Sandbox (Single-Player / Co-op)

  • Minecraft (Creative/Survival) – Build anything, mod everything, run servers. Ultimate freedom.
  • Terraria – 2D equivalent, deeper progression.
  • Garry's Mod – Physics sandbox, Lua scripting, 100k+ workshop addons.
  • The Sims 4 (Base Free) – Life sim, build/buy, CAS, mods (WickedWhims, UI Cheats).
  • Stardew Valley – Farm, relationships, modding (SMAPI).
  • No Man's Sky – Procedural universe, base building, multiplayer, VR.
  • Teardown – Voxel destruction/heist, fully destructible.

MMO / Persistent Worlds

  • EVE Online – Player-driven economy, politics, war, espionage. Real consequence.
  • Second Life – User-created world, economy, scripting (LSL), adult. 20 years running.
  • Foxhole – Persistent WWII MMO, logistics-driven, player-run everything.
  • Wurm Online – Terraforming, building, skill grind, player kingdoms.

Game Creation Systems (Make Your Own Rules)

  • RPG Maker MZ / Unite – JRPG creation, no code.
  • GameMaker / Godot / Unity / Unreal – Full engine control.
  • Dreams (PS4/5) – Visual programming, sculpting, music, share.
  • Core (PC) – Unreal-based, Lua, publish to platform.
  • Roblox Studio – Luau, massive audience, monetization.

Trade-offs

GameFreedom TypeLimitations
MinecraftCreative/StructuralBlock grid, no native narrative
EVE OnlineSocial/Economic/PoliticalSteep learning, time-intensive, PvP loss
GModPhysics/ScriptingSource engine limits, no persistence

Choose by friction tolerance: Minecraft (low), EVE (extreme), Engines (infinite but requires skill).
