Saving Microgames in WarioWare D.I.Y. on DeSmuME

DeSmuME cannot save individual microgames as separate files. It saves the entire NDS ROM/SAV state (battery backup), which includes your D.I.Y. progress, created microgames, and unlocked content.

How Saving Works in WarioWare D.I.Y.

  • In-Game Save: Use the "Save" option in the main menu (Mona's shop → Save). This writes to the .sav file.
  • DeSmuME Save States (F1–F10): Snapshots of entire emulator state—useful for checkpoints but not portable across versions.
  • Export .WMG Files (Real Hardware Feature): On a real DS/3DS, you can export microgames to an SD card as .WMG files for sharing. DeSmuME does not emulate SD card export/import.

Workarounds for Creators

  1. Frequent In-Game Saves: Save after every few microgames you create/test.
  2. Backup .sav File: Copy gamename.dsv (or .sav) from DeSmuME's battery folder to cloud/USB regularly.
  3. Use Real Hardware for Sharing: Transfer your .sav to a flashcart (R4, Ace3DS+, EZ-Flash Omega) → play on DS/3DS → export .WMG properly.
  4. Homebrew Tools (Advanced): WarioWare D.I.Y. Save Editor (community Python scripts) can parse .sav and extract .WMG data, but setup is complex.

Best Practice

Treat the DeSmuME .sav as your master project file. Back it up often. For distribution, move to real hardware or a 3DS with CFW (TWiLight Menu++) to use the official export feature.
