How to Safely Open a Game Boy Advance SP Cartridge Case

Warning: Opening a GBA cartridge voids any remaining warranty and risks damaging the PCB, save battery, or casing. Only proceed if necessary (battery swap, deep cleaning, repair).

Tools Required

  • Tri-wing (Y-type) screwdriver – 3.8mm or 4.0mm (standard for Nintendo carts). Phillips/flathead will strip the screws.
  • Plastic pry tool / spudger – Avoid metal to prevent scratching.
  • Anti-static wrist strap (recommended).
  • Clean, well-lit workspace + small parts tray.

Step-by-Step

  1. Remove the Screw: Turn cartridge label-down. Unscrew the single tri-wing screw on the back (some revisions have two). Keep the screw safe.
  2. Separate the Shell: Insert the spudger into the seam near the screw post. Gently twist to release the internal clips. Work around the perimeter—do not force. The front label half and back half will separate.
  3. Extract the PCB: The circuit board sits in the front half. Lift it straight up. Note the orientation of the contacts (gold fingers face outward).
  4. Perform Maintenance:
    • Battery Replacement (CR1616 or CR2025): Desolder old, solder new (observe polarity +).
    • Contact Cleaning: 99% IPA + lint-free swab on gold fingers.
  5. Reassemble:
    1. Seat PCB in front shell (contacts aligned).
    2. Snap back shell on—press evenly until clips click.
    3. Reinsert tri-wing screw; snug only (plastic threads strip easily).

Common Pitfalls

  • Stripped Screw: Use a fresh, high-quality tri-wing bit. Press down firmly while turning.
  • Cracked Clips: Patience > force. Warm the shell slightly (hair dryer, low) to make plastic more pliable.
  • Lost Save Data: Battery swap with power (coin cell holder) preserves saves; full desolder loses them unless you bridge VCC during swap.

When to Seek a Pro

If the screw is stripped, clips are brittle, or you need microsoldering (trace repair, capacitor replacement), a retro repair specialist with a hot-air station is safer than DIY.

Handle with care, and your cartridge will last another 20 years.
