Do Game Boy Games Work on Game Boy Advance? Yes - Backward Compatibility Guide

Yes. **Game Boy Advance (GBA), GBA SP, Game Boy Player (GameCube)** are **backward compatible** with:

  • Game Boy (DMG) — Original gray bricks.
  • Game Boy Color (GBC).

How It Works

  • GBA has **two CPUs**: ARM7TDMI (GBA) + **Sharp LR35902 (Z80-clone)** for GB/GBC mode.
  • Insert GB/GBC cart → Physical switch clicks → GBA enters "GB Mode" (screen shrinks to 160x144, Z80 runs).
  • GBA SP / Micro: Same. Screen scales (SP stretches; Micro near-perfect pixel).
  • Game Boy Player (GameCube): Plays GB/GBC/GBA on TV via GBA hardware.

Exceptions & Notes

  • Game Boy Micro: **No GB/GBC support.** Different cartridge slot shape (smaller). Only GBA games.
  • DS / DS Lite: Play GBA only (Slot-2). **No GB/GBC.**
  • Colorization: Hold L+R (or Select) at GB boot → Palette options (Classic, Green, Blue, Inverted, Custom).
  • Link Cable: GB/GBC games link with other GB/GBC/GBA/SP via **GBA Link Cable** (universal).

Summary: GBA/SP = Yes. Micro = No. DS = GBA only.
