League of Legends Genre: MOBA, Not Traditional RPG

League of Legends (LoL) is not a traditional RPG (Role-Playing Game). It's a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena).

Why It's Not an RPG

  • No persistent character progression: Champions have fixed stats/abilities per match. No leveling up across games, skill trees, or permanent gear.
  • Competitive match focus: 5v5 strategic combat; win by destroying the enemy Nexus. No narrative questline in matches.
  • Minimal storytelling in-match: Lore exists externally (cinematics, comics), but gameplay is pure competition.

RPG-Like Elements It Does Have

  • Champion selection: Diverse roster with unique roles (Tank, Mage, Assassin, etc.) feels like class choice.
  • In-match itemization: Buy items to customize stats/abilities during a game—similar to RPG gear.
  • Team composition: Building a balanced team (synergy, roles) mirrors RPG party building.

Verdict

LoL shares surface similarities but is fundamentally a competitive MOBA. If you want persistent progression + story, try actual RPGs (WoW, Final Fantasy XIV, Path of Exile).
