Unfreezing a Game Boy Advance SP: You Must Power Cycle

You cannot unfreeze a GBA SP without turning it off. A freeze is a CPU halt (infinite loop, bad opcode, bus error). No button combo breaks it because the input handler isn't running.

Correct Restart Procedure

  1. Hold POWER (slide switch) for 2–3 seconds until screen goes black.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Slide POWER again to boot.

Preventing Future Freezes

  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: 99% IPA + cotton swab on gold fingers. Insert/eject 5× to wipe slot.
  • Battery Health: Swollen or low‑capacity SP battery causes voltage droop → crashes. Replace with 3.7V 850mAh Li‑ion (eBay/Amazon, $8).
  • Flashcart Firmware: If using EZ‑Flash Omega / EverDrive GBA, update kernel to latest.
  • Avoid Cheat Codes: Action Replay / GameShark codes often freeze on specific hooks. Disable master code.
  • Heat: Don't play in direct sun / hot car. SP has no active cooling.

If it freezes on the *same spot* in a specific game: The ROM dump is bad (header mismatch, overdump) or the save file is corrupt. Re‑dump or delete .sav.
