What Was the First Game Ever? (Historical Overview)

No single "first game" exists—definitions vary. Leading candidates by category:

Ancient Board Games (Archaeological Evidence)

  • Senet (Egypt, c. 3100 BCE) – race game with religious symbolism.
  • Royal Game of Ur (Mesopotamia, c. 2600 BCE) – dice + strategy; rules deciphered from cuneiform tablet.
  • Mancala family (Africa/Middle East, c. 7th century BCE onward) – sowing/capturing seeds.

Prehistoric / Folk Games

  • Knucklebones (Astragali) – animal ankle bones thrown like dice/jacks; global, Paleolithic.
  • Tag / Hide-and-Seek – universal children's games; no material record.

Why It's Unanswerable

  • "Game" vs. "play" vs. "ritual" blurs in prehistory.
  • Independent invention across cultures.
  • Organic materials (wood, bone, sand) rarely fossilize.

What we know: structured rule-based play is at least 5,000 years old and likely far older.
