Catching Mew and Celebi in Pokémon FireRed: Only Possible via Cheats, Trading, or ROM Hacks

Mew and Celebi cannot be obtained legitimately in Pokémon FireRed. They were exclusive to real-world Nintendo events held between 2003 and 2006—long since ended—and no in-game method, glitch, or transfer path exists to acquire them in Generation III.

Why They're Unobtainable Normally

  • Event-Only Distribution: Both Pokémon were gifted via Mystery Gift at physical events (e.g., Pokémon Rocks America, Toys "R" Us distributions).
  • No In-Game Location: Unlike Mew in Generation I (accessible via the Trainer-Fly glitch), FireRed has no trigger, NPC, or hidden area for either mythical.
  • Transfer Barrier: Pal Park (Generation IV) requires a Generation III cartridge, but you can't get Mew or Celebi *into* Gen III legitimately in the first place.

The Only Ways to Get Them

  1. Cheat Device: Action Replay, GameShark, or CodeBreaker with "Wild Pokémon Modifier" codes.
  2. Trade: From someone who used cheats or attended an original event (extremely rare).
  3. ROM Hack: Play a modification like FireRed Omega or Throwback that adds them to the wild or story.

Risks of Cheating

Cheat devices can corrupt your save file, generate "Bad Eggs," or break event scripts. Always back up your .sav file first.

Modern Legitimate Alternatives

Today, you can obtain both Pokémon legitimately through:

  • Mew: Poké Ball Plus accessory → Pokémon GO → Pokémon HOME → Scarlet/Violet.
  • Celebi: Special Research in Pokémon GO → Pokémon HOME → modern games.
