DSi Game Generations Explained: Hardware Eras, Not Official Generations

There's no formal "generation" labeling for DSi games like consoles, but the DS family evolved through three distinct hardware/software eras:

1. Original DS Era (2004–2011)

  • Hardware: Nintendo DS (2004), DS Lite (2006).
  • Software: Standard DS cartridges (NTR-XXX). No DSi-exclusive features.
  • Key Traits: Dual screens, touchscreen, microphone, GBA slot, Wi-Fi (WEP only).

2. DSi Era (2008–2011)

  • Hardware: Nintendo DSi (2008), DSi XL (2009).
  • Software: DSi-Enhanced games (work on DS/DSi but use DSi features: cameras, SD slot, DSi Shop, slightly faster CPU). DSi-Exclusive games (require DSi: camera apps, DSiWare).
  • Key Changes: No GBA slot, SD card slot, 2 cameras, DSi Shop (closed 2017), improved Wi-Fi (WPA2), brighter screens.

3. 3DS Era (2011–2020)

  • Hardware: 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS/XL, New 2DS XL.
  • Software: 3DS cartridges (CTR-XXX) – stereoscopic 3D, new inputs (C-stick, ZL/ZR), NFC (amiibo). DS/DSi games are backward compatible (few exceptions).

Key Compatibility Rules

  • Standard DS games → work on DS, DSi, 3DS.
  • DSi-Enhanced games → work on DS (without DSi features), DSi, 3DS.
  • DSi-Exclusive / DSiWare → only on DSi/3DS.
  • 3DS games → never work on DS or DSi.

This framework helps you understand which games run where, especially when buying used or setting up emulation.
