Nintendo DS AC Adapter: Specs, Compatibility & Replacement Guide

The Nintendo DS AC adapter (model WAP-002) is a 5.2V / 450mA (2.34W) switching power supply with a proprietary 3.5mm barrel connector (center positive).

What It Does

  • Converts 100-240V AC (wall outlet) → 5.2V DC (console input).
  • Charges internal battery (DS/DS Lite) or powers system directly (DSi/3DS family).
  • Enables Play While Charging: Battery charges during gameplay; no pass-through bypass.

Buying Replacements

  • Official Nintendo: $10-15 used. Guaranteed spec/safety.
  • Quality 3rd Party: Look for "5.2V 450mA" (DS/DSi) or "4.6V 900mA" (3DS family), UL/CE listed.
  • Avoid: Unbranded $3 adapters — fire risk, voltage ripple damages PMIC.
  • USB-C Mods: Exist for 3DS (internal board swap) — not for DS/DSi.

Troubleshooting

  • LED on adapter but no charge → broken wire at strain relief (common). Wiggle near plug.
  • DSi/3DS: "Charging" icon appears but % doesn't rise → battery dead / charging circuit fault.
