How to Reset Nintendo DSi / DSi XL: Soft & Hard Reset
Soft Reset (Restart — No Data Loss)
Press **POWER** to turn off.
Hold **POWER + START** simultaneously until Nintendo logo appears (~3 sec).
Release. System reboots cleanly.
Use for frozen games, wireless glitches, minor hiccups.
Hard Reset / Factory Reset (Erases ALL Data)
**Backup first!** System Settings → Data Management → System Memory → Copy to SD Card (photos, Flipnotes, DSiWare saves). Game saves on cartridges are safe.
System Settings (wrench icon) → **Page 4** → **Format System Memory**.
Read warnings → **Format**.
Enter parental PIN if set.
Confirm. System reboots to initial setup (language, date, nickname).
Critical Notes
Irreversible: All DSiWare, saves (internal), photos, sound recordings, Wi-Fi settings, Shop account link **gone forever**.
Nintendo Network ID (NNID): Unlinked automatically. Can relink after setup.
DSi Shop: Closed 2017. You **cannot re-download** purchased DSiWare after format. Only keep what's on SD card.
DSi XL: Identical procedure.
When to Use Which
Soft Reset: Game freeze, wireless drop, app crash.
Hard Reset: Selling/giving away, persistent corruption, forgotten parental PIN (if no email recovery), fresh start.
If unsure, **contact Nintendo Support** before formatting. They may recover a forgotten PIN via serial number verification.
