What Type of Battery Does the Nintendo DS Use?

All Nintendo DS models (DS "Phat," DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL) use a rechargeable Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) battery pack specific to each hardware revision. They do not use standard AA/AAA batteries.

Charging

  • Via proprietary AC Adapter (DS Phat: WAP-002; DS Lite/DSi/DSi XL: WAP-002(US) / WAP-002(EU) — same plug, different wall prongs).
  • Charge time: ~2.5–3 hours from dead.
  • Play time: 5–19 hours depending on model, brightness, volume, and wireless usage.

Replacement

Buy OEM Nintendo or reputable third-party (e.g., Cameron Sino, Niche) replacements. Avoid unbranded "high capacity" packs—they often swell or fail quickly. Installation requires a small Phillips (#00) screwdriver.
