DSi Shop Channel: Permanently Closed Since 2017

The Nintendo DSi Shop Channel has been permanently closed since March 31, 2017. No purchases, redownloads, or DSi Points transactions are possible.

What This Means

• No new game or application downloads
• No DSi Points purchase or redemption
• No access from any DSi or DSi XL system
• Previously downloaded content remains playable on the original console

Why Nintendo Shut It Down

• Lifecycle End: DSi launched 2009, succeeded by 3DS (2011) and Switch (2017)
• Platform Consolidation: Nintendo focused resources on modern eShop infrastructure
• Security: Legacy TLS/SSL implementations posed unpatchable vulnerabilities
• Server Costs: Maintaining authentication and delivery for a dormant user base

Modern Alternatives

• Nintendo 3DS eShop: Also closed (March 2023), but covers DS/3DS library
• Nintendo Switch eShop: Current platform with select DS titles re-released (e.g., Ghost Trick, World Ends With You)
• Physical Cartridges: DS games remain widely available used. Region-free on DS/DSi/3DS
• Homebrew (CFW): TWiLight Menu++ on DSi/3DS enables SD card game loading from legal backups

If you have a DSi with purchased content, it's safe. If you're buying a DSi now, factor in zero digital store access.
