Nintendo DS Wi-Fi Games: How to Play Online Today (Wiimmfi Guide)

Official Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) service shut down on May 20, 2014. Matchmaking, leaderboards, and DLC downloads no longer work on original servers. However, a massive community effort has revived online play for dozens of titles via Wiimmfi.

The Revival: Wiimmfi

Wiimmfi is a custom server replacement supporting Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Metroid Prime Hunters, Tetris DS, Pokémon Gen 4 & 5, and many more. It requires patching your game to redirect DNS requests.

Supported Heavy Hitters

How to Connect (Modern Hardware)

  1. Hardware: Nintendo DS/DSi/3DS with Custom Firmware (CFW).
    3DS: Boot9strap + Luma3DS.
    DSi: Unlaunch + HiyaCFW / TWiLight Menu++.
    Original DS/DS Lite: Flashcart (R4i Gold 3DS+, Ace3DS X) running TWiLight Menu++.
  2. DNS Patch: Set Primary DNS to 95.217.77.151 (Wiimmfi) in your system's Wi-Fi settings. Better: Use TWiLight Menu++ or nds-constraint which auto-patches the game binary in RAM—no manual DNS entry needed.
  3. Play: Launch the game → Nintendo WFC Settings → Connect. You'll see the Wiimmfi welcome message.

Local Wireless Still Works Natively

Ad-hoc multiplayer (DS↔DS, DSi↔DS, 3DS↔DS) for Multi-Card Play or Download Play works perfectly without internet, CFW, or DNS changes. It uses the hardware's native 802.11 local wireless protocol.
