DS Game Cartridge Serial Numbers: They Don't Exist (Here's What Identifies Them)

DS cartridges have no printed serial number. Identification uses:

What *Is* On the Cart

  • Game Code (4-char): e.g., NTR-AM4P-USA → Printed on label & PCB. Format: NTR-XXXX-REG.
  • Nintendo Logo + "Licensed by Nintendo" — Authenticity marker.
  • PCB Stamp: Internal board has lot/date codes (visible if open).

How to Identify a Specific Cart

MethodUse Case
Game Code (Label)Verify region, version, authenticity. Search "NTR-XXXX" on No-Intro DAT.
Barcode (Box)Retail SKU. Scan for price/DB entry.
CRC32 / SHA-1 (ROM)Exact dump verification. Tools: RToolDS, NDS Backup Tool.
Save File HeaderHomebrew tools read internal save ID.

Why No Serial?

Cartridges are mass-produced ROM masks (or flash for repros). Individual serialization adds cost for zero benefit—unlike consoles (warranty, repair, bans).

Need to verify a cart? Photo the label (Game Code) + run CRC check.
