3DS vs DS Game Compatibility: What Works and What Doesn't

3DS games DO NOT work on DS / DS Lite / DSi. Different cartridge shape (tab on side), different CPU (ARM11 vs ARM9/7), different firmware — physically and logically incompatible.

DS games WORK on 3DS / 3DS XL / 2DS / New 3DS / New 2DS XL. Backward compatibility is native:

• Insert DS cart → appears on Home Menu → plays.
• Screens: Top = 400×240 (stretched), Bottom = 320×240 (native). Hold Start + Select at boot → native resolution (black borders).
• No GBA slot on 3DS — GBA carts / Guitar Hero grips / Rumble Pak / Memory Pak do not work.
• DSi-enhanced / DSi-exclusive games (camera, shop) work on 3DS.
• Local wireless (DS Download Play, PictoChat) works between 3DS and DS systems.

DS Games on 3DS — Enhancements

• Home Menu suspend/resume (sleep mode works).
• Brightness / volume via Home button.
• Screenshot (Home → 📷) — not on original DS.

Playing 3DS Games on DS? Impossible.

If you want 3DS games, you need a 3DS family system. Used 2DS ~$60–$80; New 3DS XL ~$130–$180.
