Nintendo DSi Internet Access: Wi-Fi Only, Not Everywhere, WFC Discontinued

The Nintendo DS (DSi included) does not have internet access everywhere.

Here's why:

  • The DS uses Wi-Fi: You must be within range of a wireless network to connect.
  • No cellular connection: Unlike smartphones, the DS has no built-in cellular data.
  • Limited functionality: The DS could connect for some games, features, and downloads, but it wasn't a full web browser like a computer or phone.

To use the internet on your DS, you need a Wi-Fi network, such as:

  • Home: Your own Wi-Fi router
  • Public Wi-Fi hotspots: Coffee shops, libraries, airports, etc.

Additionally, keep in mind:

  • Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) is discontinued: This dedicated online service shut down in 2014 and is no longer accessible.
  • Many DS games required WFC: If a game used WFC, you can't play it online anymore.
  • DS internet access is limited: You can't browse freely; only specific features were available.

While the DS could connect to the internet, it was limited by its reliance on Wi-Fi and the discontinued WFC service.
