How to Get More Free Games for DSi

Downloading commercial DSiWare/DS games for free is piracy. Here are legal ways to expand your library:

1. Nintendo DSi Shop (Legacy)

  • The shop closed March 2017, but previously purchased titles can still be redownloaded: Settings → Data Management → DSiWare → Redownload.
  • Free-to-play titles that were offered (e.g., Flipnote Studio, Mario Clock, Birds & Beans) are still in your purchase history if claimed.

2. Official Promotions (Rare Now)

3. Homebrew / Custom Firmware (Technical, Offline Only)

  • TWiLight Menu++ + hiyaCFW / unlaunch lets you run homebrew, emulators (NES, GB/GBC, GBA), and your own dumped DSiWare/ROMs from SD card.
  • Legal only if you own the original games. Voids warranty (moot), risks brick if done wrong. Follow dsi.cfw.guide meticulously.

4. Physical Used Games

  • DS cartridges (region-free) work on DSi. Cheap at GameStop, eBay, CeX, local shops ($2–$10 for many titles).
  • DSi-enhanced carts (white label) unlock DSi features (camera, shop).

5. Ambassador Program (Historical)

Early 3DS adopters got 10 free NES + 10 GBA games. DSi had no equivalent.

Stick to official DSiWare redownloads, cheap used DS carts, or homebrew with your own dumps.
