How to Play Pokémon Red on Nintendo DS: Legal Options Explained

The original Pokémon Red (Game Boy) cannot be played directly on any Nintendo DS model. The DS and DS Lite have a Game Boy Advance slot (Slot-2), but it only accepts GBA cartridges—Game Boy and Game Boy Color carts physically don’t fit. The DS also lacks the Sharp LR35902 CPU and video hardware needed for GB/GBC games. The DSi and 3DS removed Slot-2 entirely, eliminating even GBA backward compatibility.

Legal Ways to Play Pokémon Red

  • Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console: Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow were released on the 3DS eShop in 2016. The eShop closed in March 2023, so you can only redownload if you previously purchased them.
  • Game Boy Color + Original Cartridge: The authentic hardware experience.
  • Analogue Pocket: An FPGA-based handheld that plays original Game Boy cartridges with perfect accuracy.
  • Pokémon FireRed (GBA): A full remake playable on DS/DS Lite via Slot-2, or on 3DS via Virtual Console.

Emulation Note

PC and mobile emulators like mGBA and SameBoy exist, but legality varies by jurisdiction. For ethical emulation, you should own the original cartridge.
