Can Two DS Consoles Link for GBA Games? No - Hardware Limitation

No. The DS/DS Lite **GBA slot (Slot-2) does not support multiplayer linking** for GBA games.

Why It Doesn't Work

  • GBA Link Cable protocol requires **GBA/SP/Micro/Player** hardware.
  • DS Slot-2 electrically connects the GBA bus, but **multiplayer registers are not bridged** to the DS wireless/CPU for GBA mode.
  • DS Wireless (IEEE 802.11) only works for **DS games** (Download Play, local wireless).

What Does Work

  • Single-player GBA: Insert cart → Boots in GBA mode. Full speed, sound, saves to cart.
  • DS Download Play: DS game → DS game (e.g., Mario Kart DS demo).
  • Physical GBA Link Cable: Connect **two GBA/SP/Micro** units. Does not work if one/both are DS.

Modern Solutions for Linked GBA Play

  • GBARunner2 (DSi/3DS Homebrew): Emulates GBA link cable over **local wireless / internet** between two hacked DSi/3DS units.
  • mGBA (PC/Phone): Netplay link cable emulation.
  • Analogue Pocket: Link cable port + wireless link via firmware update (2023+).

Original Hardware Verdict: Two DS units **cannot** link GBA games. Use two GBAs/SPs or emulation.
