Does Action Replay Max for DS Lite Work on GBA Games? No—Here's Why

The Action Replay Max for Nintendo DS Lite does not work with Game Boy Advance games. It's designed exclusively for Nintendo DS software.

Technical Reasons

  • Different hardware modes: The DS/DS Lite runs GBA games in a hardware-level "GBA mode" that disables the DS slot, ARM9 CPU, and DS-specific memory maps. The Action Replay Max DS card only executes in DS mode.
  • Different cheat engines: GBA Action Replay devices (like Action Replay for Game Boy Advance or GameShark Advance) patch GBA ROMs in real-time via the GBA slot. The DS Max card lacks GBA-slot passthrough and GBA-mode firmware.
  • Save type mismatch: GBA saves (SRAM, Flash, EEPROM) are handled by the GBA cartridge itself. DS cheat devices intercept DS card saves, not GBA cart saves.

What You Need for GBA Cheats

  • Action Replay for Game Boy Advance (white cartridge, GBA slot)
  • GameShark Advance / GameShark SP
  • CodeBreaker GBA
  • Flashcarts (EZ-Flash Omega, EverDrive GBA X5) – Support cheat databases (.cht) natively on real hardware.

On DS Lite: GBA Slot Still Works for Legit GBA Games

The DS Lite's GBA slot plays original GBA cartridges natively—but cheat devices must be GBA-slot devices, not DS-slot ones. You cannot use a DS cheat cartridge to modify a GBA game running in the adjacent slot.

If you're using a flashcart (like R4, Acekard, or DSTWO) in the DS slot, some kernels (YSMenu, Wood, TwilightMenu++) can launch GBA ROMs via an emulator (GBARunner2) with cheat support—but that's emulation, not native GBA mode.
