Forgot Your Nintendo Network ID? Recovery Steps & Account Migration Guide

Critical: Nintendo Network IDs (NNID) cannot be recovered if forgotten. They are not retrievable via email lookup. However, your purchases and data are tied to the NNID, not the ID string itself. Here's how to regain access.

Immediate Steps to Find Your NNID

  1. Check Old Emails: Search for "Nintendo Network ID", "Nintendo Account", "eShop receipt", "Club Nintendo". The NNID is in welcome/confirmation emails.
  2. Check Any 3DS/Wii U:
    • 3DS: System Settings → Nintendo Network ID Settings → (top screen shows ID).
    • Wii U: User Selection Screen → (ID shown under Mii name) or System Settings → Nintendo Network ID.
  3. Check Linked Accounts: If you linked NNID to a Nintendo Account (for Switch/My Nintendo), log into accounts.nintendo.com → "Linked Accounts" → Nintendo Network ID.
  4. Check Game Cartridges: Some games (e.g., Mario Kart 7) display your NNID in the license/owner info screen.

If You Absolutely Cannot Find It

Option A: Create a New Nintendo Account (Recommended for Switch Era)

  • Go to accounts.nintendo.com → Create Account.
  • This gives you a Nintendo Account (email/password based) – the modern system replacing NNID.
  • Consequence: You lose access to 3DS/Wii U eShop purchases tied to the old NNID. No merge possible.
  • Why it's okay: 3DS/Wii U eShops closed March 27, 2023. No new purchases possible. Only redownloads of owned titles – which require the old NNID.

Option B: Contact Nintendo Support (For Save Data / Redownloads)

  • Phone: 1-800-255-3700 (US/CA).
  • Provide: Serial numbers of old consoles, purchase receipts, credit card used, approximate dates.
  • They may locate the NNID internally and help unlink it for transfer – but cannot tell you the ID string.
  • Use case: You need to System Transfer saves to a new 3DS, or redownload a delisted game you own.

Option C: Social Media Link Recovery

  • If you linked NNID to Facebook/Twitter/Google/Apple ID on the 3DS/Wii U "Link Account" screen, try logging into those services and checking connected apps.
  • Rarely works; Nintendo removed most social linking in 2017.

Pro Tip for the Future

Use a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, KeePass) and store: NNID: [username] | Linked Email: [email] | Console Serials: [list] | Support Case IDs: [refs]. Never rely on memory for opaque usernames.
