Trading a Nintendo DS for a DSi: How It Works (It's Not a 1:1 Swap)

You cannot directly "trade in a DS for a DSi" as a 1:1 swap at retail. They are different hardware generations. Here's the realistic process:

Trade-In Reality

  • Value gap: A used DS (original/Phat) trades for ~$15–$30. A used DSi sells for ~$50–$100. You'll pay the difference + tax.
  • Condition matters: Cracked hinge, dead pixels, worn touchscreen, missing stylus/charger reduce trade value sharply.
  • Retailer policy: GameStop, Best Buy, local shops accept DS family trades but apply current promo rates (often low). Check online estimator first.
  • No "special" requirement: Just the console, charger, and ideally stylus. No secret code.

Better Paths

  1. Sell DS privately (eBay/Mercari/FB): Get $25–$45 cash → put toward DSi purchase.
  2. Buy DSi used directly: Skip trade-in margin. Hunt for DSi XL (larger screens, better battery) ~$70–$120.
  3. Consider 3DS: Backward compatible with DS/DSi games, adds 3D, eShop, newer library. Used 3DS ~$80–$130.

Key Differences: DS vs. DSi

Decide if DSi features (camera, DSiWare, no GBA slot) are worth the upgrade cost over your current DS.
