The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) ceased production in 1995, approximately 10 years after its North American launch in October 1985.
Despite discontinuation, the NES left an indelible legacy: 61+ million units sold, iconic franchises born (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania), and the establishment of Nintendo's quality-control licensing model that saved the industry. The NES Classic Edition (2016) and Nintendo Switch Online NES library keep the library alive today.
