How to Play Minecraft Online: Complete Guide (Java & Bedrock)

Minecraft multiplayer works differently on **Java Edition** (PC/Mac/Linux) and **Bedrock Edition** (Windows 10/11, consoles, mobile). They are **not cross-compatible**.

Step 1: Identify Your Edition

  • Java: Launcher says "Java Edition." Mods, servers, Realms (Java).
  • Bedrock: Title screen says "Minecraft" (no "Java"). Marketplace, Realms Plus, cross-play consoles/mobile.

Option A: Minecraft Realms (Official, Easiest, Paid)

Setup: Main menu → Minecraft Realms → Create New → Choose world → Invite friends (via Xbox Gamertag / Microsoft account).

Option B: Public Servers (Free, Huge Variety)

Java Edition

  • **Server Lists:** minecraftservers.org, mcservers.net, minecraft-mp.com.
  • **Popular:** Hypixel (minigames), Mineplex, CubeCraft, 2b2t (anarchy), Hermitcraft-style SMPs.
  • **Join:** Multiplayer → Add Server → Paste IP (e.g., `mc.hypixel.net`) → Done.

Bedrock Edition

  • **Featured Servers:** Main menu → Servers tab → The Hive, Mineplex, Lifeboat, Cubecraft, NetherGames.
  • **External Servers:** Play → Servers → Add Server → IP + Port (19132 default). Fewer support Bedrock.

Option C: LAN / Direct Connect (Free, Local Only)

  • Same Network: Host opens world → Esc → Open to LAN (Java) / Toggle "Visible to LAN" (Bedrock). Others join via Multiplayer → Scanning.
  • Hamachi / ZeroTier / Tailscale: Virtual LAN over internet. Host shares virtual IP. Good for private games without port forwarding.

Option D: Self-Hosted Dedicated Server (Advanced, Free Software)

  • Java: PaperMC (optimized), Purpur, Fabric/Forge for mods. Run on PC, VPS, or Raspberry Pi 4.
  • Bedrock: Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) official, or GeyserMC (allows Java clients to join Bedrock server!).
  • Port Forwarding: Router → Port 25565 (Java) or 19132 UDP (Bedrock) → Server PC local IP.
  • Hosting: Aternos (free, ad-supported), PloudOS, or cheap VPS ($5/mo).

Essential Tips

  • Version Match: Server and client must match exactly (e.g., 1.21.1). Launcher → Installations → New → Version.
  • Voice Chat: Use Discord (best), or in-game chat (T).
  • Rules: Read server rules. Griefing, cheating, toxicity = ban.
  • Backups: Auto-backup plugin/script essential for survival worlds.

Start with **Realms** or a **Featured Bedrock Server** for zero-config fun. Graduate to public Java servers or self-hosting for total control.
