Does Prototype Have Online Multiplayer? No—It's Strictly Single-Player

No. Prototype (2009) and Prototype 2 (2012) are **single-player only**. No co-op, no versus, no online modes exist on any platform (PS3, Xbox 360, PC).

Why No Multiplayer?

  • Design Focus: Radical Entertainment built the engine around one overpowered protagonist (Alex Mercer / James Heller). Synchronizing shape-shifting, biomass consumption, and city-wide destruction for two players was technically unfeasible on 2009 consoles.
  • Scope: Budget/time allocated to single-player density (thousands of pedestrians, viral detectors, military AI).

Workarounds (Not True Multiplayer)

  • Parsec / Steam Remote Play Together (PC): Stream your screen to a friend; they get keyboard/mouse/gamepad input. Works for "backseat driving" or hotseat challenges. Latency dependent.
  • Hotseat / Pass-the-Controller: Local only. Compete for high score in "Event" modes (checkpoints, consume, destroy).

Similar Games *With* Multiplayer

  • Saints Row IV: Superpowers + 2-player co-op campaign.
  • Crackdown 2 / 3: Agent powers, 4-player co-op (3), versus (2).
  • Infamous 2: UGC missions (async), but no direct co-op. Festival of Blood DLC is solo.

If you want Prototype's specific "viral god" fantasy, it's a solo ride. Grab Prototype 2 for refined mechanics and a new protagonist.
