Minimum Age Requirements for Online Gaming

There is **no universal legal age**. It depends on a stack of overlapping rules:

1. Game Rating (Content Suitability)

  • ESRB (NA): E (Everyone), E10+, T (13+), M (17+), AO (18+).
  • PEGI (EU): 3, 7, 12, 16, 18.
  • **Platform stores enforce these at purchase/download.**

2. Platform Account Policies (Contractual)

  • Xbox / PlayStation / Nintendo: Require **Parent/Guardian consent for <13** (COPPA/GDPR-K). Child accounts linked to Family Group.
  • Steam: 13+ to create account; <13 requires Family View setup by adult.
  • Epic Games: 13+; <13 gets "Cabined Account" (restricted chat/purchases) until parent verifies.
  • Mobile (Apple/Google): 13+ for own Apple ID / Google Account; Family Sharing for younger.

3. Game-Specific Terms of Service

  • Fortnite / Roblox / Minecraft: 13+ for full chat/voice; <13 gets restricted "Safe Chat" / no voice.
  • MMOs (WoW, FFXIV, ESO): 13+ (WoW/ESO), 16+ (FFXIV - PEGI 16) for subscription.
  • Competitive FPS (Valorant, CS2, CoD): 16+ or 18+ for Ranked/Voice Chat.

4. Regional Laws

  • COPPA (US): Verifiable parental consent <13 for data collection.
  • GDPR-K (EU): Parental consent <16 (member states can lower to 13).
  • China: Real-name registration; <18 limited to 3 hrs/week (Fri-Sun 8-9 PM).
  • South Korea: Shutdown Law (repealed 2021) → now "Game Time Choice" parental control.

Parental Best Practice: Use **Family Safety** (Microsoft), **Family Management** (PlayStation), **Parental Controls** (Nintendo/Switch), **Google Family Link** / **Apple Screen Time** to enforce limits regardless of minimums.
